If you like monster movies like Godzilla and/or the Blair Witch style of cinematography, then Cloverfield is the film for you. It's not the best film I've ever seen, nor is it the worst. Being able to see it for free, made it worth the price of "admission."

The movie starts out as a group of friends document the makings of and farewell party for the movie's main character, Rob. After about 18 minutes of partying and testimonials to Rob is when the poop hits the fan. A couple explosions rock New York City, with the cameraman, Hud, catching only a glimpse of the monster behind the destruction.

The rest of the film features Rob, his brother Jason, Jason's girlfriend Lilly, Hud, and a girl Hud likes named Marlena as they try to escape New York along with the rest of the populace. The run from the Brooklyn Bridge, through the subway tunnels, and with the help of an Army officer that would likely get court-marshaled for doing what he did to help them, to being rescued by the military.

The special effects are descent enough and the cast does a good job at being scared while running away. However, I didn't like the Blair Witch, so I wasn't too fond of the first-person perspective, shaky-camera filming of this movie, In a way, it was neat to get a ground-level perspective in a giant, city-crushing monster movie. However, I think this would have been a better movie if it was filmed in a more traditional method.

In conclusion, Cloverfield is a good movie, worth a rental or checking out from the library (if they do that sort of thing - I don't know). It's not very long, so even if you end up not liking it, it's not too much of your life wasted.
